Mission San Juan Bautista Founded June 24th, 1797 Visited July 12th, 2010 I chose to visit this mission because it has a historic town right next to it. When I saw the church I was surprised at how big it is. Can you believe they have been having mass here nonstop since the year 1800? I felt awed by how beautiful and ornate the altar was. It was interesting to discover that one of the founding families of the town were part of the Donner Party. A fact I learned was that the Plaza Hotel was once used as the barracks for the soldiers that guarded the mission. I was surprised to find out that there are records showing that the padres paid the neophytes for their work. I found out that the Klingon language created for the TV show Star Trek was based on the Mutsun language spoken by a nearby Native American tribe. I wonder why they built the mission right next to the San Andreas Fault. The roses at the missions were colorful and beautiful. |
